HPD: Wrong-way driver causes 5-car crash

A driver going the wrong way on the Southwest Freeway ended with him crashing head on into another car overnight.

HOUSTON – A driver going the wrong way on the Southwest Freeway ended with him crashing head on into another car overnight.

According to the Houston Police Department, it happened early Monday near Newcastle.

Police started getting calls about a driver going the wrong way around midnight. They said he was speeding and headed in the wrong direction for 20 minutes, starting near the 610 East Loop before crashing near the 610 West Loop on the opposite side of the freeway.

The hood on a red car the wrong-way driver crashed into was completely crushed in.

Fortunately, that driver survived and was taken to a hospital.

Video showed the suspect driver at one point yelling, telling first responders they’re trying to kill him. They said he actually clipped a truck before slamming head on into the red car.

One witness describes what she saw.

“I was driving down the highway, and I saw a man walking, and I almost hit the guy in front of me, and I saw nobody stopping to help, and there are two cars, one is completely messed up, and the other guy is turned around, so I stopped,” Meigha House said.

That witness is the one of several who called 911.

Now, two other cars were also involved in the crash, but everyone is expected to be OK.

Police said the driver who started all this seemed intoxicated or under the influence of something.
