HPD: Teen arrested, charged in killing at north Houston motel

HOUSTON – A 17-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the killing of a man at a motel in north Houston.

The crime happened at about 3 a.m. Tuesday at the Tropical Motel located at 4831 North Shepherd.

Police said it happened after the teenage suspect Carlos F. Mercado and the 35-year-old victim Carlos Villatoro drove to the motel and checked into a room. At some point, police said the two got into an altercation that ended with Mercado beating, choking and stabbing Villatoro with a broken beer bottle.

Police said Mercado left the motel in the victim's vehicle. Minutes later, a Harris County Precinct One deputy constable stopped the vehicle Mercado was driving for a traffic violation.

The deputy constable detained Mercado after an initial investigation.
