HOUSTON -- A judge in Houston could be removed from hearing domestic violence cases over his comments that allegedly minimized such incidents.
The Harris County district attorney’s office on Tuesday filed motions to bolster previous requests to have Court-at-Law Judge Reagan Helm recuse himself.
The Houston Chronicle reports Helm is asked to step aside from 74 cases over his "frivolous" comments that "trivialize the seriousness of the proceedings."
Prosecutors say in one case Helm allegedly told a woman who sought a protective order, "He looks like a real killer to me. You’re telling me you are afraid of him?"
Helm denies that his remarks were inappropriate and said he will meet with a representative from the State Bar of Texas this week. The 68-year-old judge could face an administrative hearing if he declines to recuse himself.
