HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – The signs read "private property" even though no one lives at the home on Lakeside Drive in Channelview. Still, someone was shot and killed inside after a dangerous encounter in the early morning hours Monday.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office tell KHOU 11 News that the next door neighbors, a husband and wife, were keeping an eye on the now-vacant home after the owner moved out of state.
They heard something around 2 a.m. Monday after the motion detector was activated. They walked over, guns in hand, and found the back door broken in. Once inside, there was a man, an alleged burglar.
Deputies said the man lunged at the couple and the couple opened fire, shooting the alleged burglar.
Across the street from where the shooting happened, Gary Flores was helping clear out his in-law's vacant home after it too was also broken into two days before.
"Very scary. I mean I hate to be in that situation," said Flores. "With them knowing no one living there, opportunity for them to get a quick buck. That's what you do as neighbors. You look over each other's property and you look over stuff and you let everyone know what's going on."
Jessica Martinez, a neighbor who has lived on the street for 15 years, said she's noticed more break-ins recently.
"It's been happening a lot over here. Somebody broke into my house like two years ago. So I am just scared because I know it's been happening over here," said Martinez.
Deputies confirmed the alleged burglar died from his gunshot wounds at Ben Taub Hospital. He has not been identified.
