When deputies arrived, they learned that two suspects forced entry into the home and demanded money. One of the suspects fatally shot the homeowner, identified as Adrianus Michael Kusuma. His younger brother was identified by friends as Sebastian Kusuma.

Kusuma worked at the Sunny Side of the Street Cafe as a cook. A memorial is growing outside of the restaurant. Werthwin was one of several people who stopped by the restaurant to drop off flowers, candles and leave behind heartfelt notes on the window.
