Details emerge on woman charged with killing mother for baby

Police say the woman who killed a Houston mother and took her 6-week-old baby earlier this week was trying to cover up a miscarriage.

HOUSTON - Erika Miranda-Alvarez was a no-show in probable cause court Thursday night. Instead she was in a medical unit as prosecutors described the events that led to her being charged with capital murder.

Prosecutors say Miranda-Alvarez had hospital wristbands in her pockets when detectives found her Thursday morning. One had the name of the victim of Tuesday's murder in Greenspoint: Carolina Flores. The other wristband had birth date of her baby -- Shamali Flores -- on it.

Prosecutors say Miranda-Alvarez denied stabbing Flores as is laid out in the charging document.

"She stated the front door was open and the complainant was already lying dead on her bedroom floor when she arrived at the apartment," according to one prosecutor in court. "She stated she took the complainant's infant daughter Shamali Flores and left the apartment."

Thursday's arrest caps off a long few days for the Flores family, who had no idea who killed Carolina and took her 6-week-old daughter.

Houston police say their investigation them them to apartments on South Gessner on the southwest side early Thursday morning where they found Miranda-Alvarez and the baby.

"(Miranda-Alvarez) she said she had been recently pregnant but had lost the child," one prosecutor said. "(Miranda-Alvarez) took the complainant's daughter because she did not want to disappoint her boyfriend because she had lost her baby."

Investigators say they found a pair of scissors on Flores' body, but they don't know if it's the murder weapon.

Miranda-Alvarez is being held without bail and is due in court next Wednesday.
