HOUSTON—A 16-year-old girl was charged in connection with her mother’s brutal stabbing death at their north Harris County home. The teen’s 22-year-old friend was also arrested and has confessed to the crime, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The girl and her mother, 48-year-old Mary Ann Murphy, were at home in the 8300 block of Poplar Ridge Lane when the attack happened early Monday. The girl said two men broke into their home around 1 a.m. and attacked her mom, but her friend, Zein Imran Ahmed, told a different story.
Ahmed told investigators the teen let him in the home and he went into her mom’s bedroom. He climbed on top of Murphy, and when she woke up startled, he plunged the knife into her several times.
The teen left the house and went to the neighbor’s home as her mother screamed.
She said her mom was screaming loud, and I did think I heard a scream but I didn’t know for sure,” said Marcus Cox, the neighbor. “I just thought it was some kids down the street.”
The mother, who sources say worked for the DPS for 30 years, died at the scene.
Ahmed was arrested and given a $100,000 bond. After his confession, investigators determined the teen also played a role in her mother’s death.
The daughter was placed in the custody of the Harris County Juvenile Probation Office.
Investigators have not said why the mother was killed.
Ahmed’s family members insisted he was home playing video games when the murder took place. And their attorney said he had evidence that Ahmed was innocent.
“I’ve got testimony and video,” said Don Hecker. “I’ve got a lot of stuff and he’s just not guilty.
Hecker also said the confession obtained by investigators was forced and not credible because his client felt pressured to admit to something he didn’t do.
And he blamed the 16-year-old girl for pointing a finger at Ahmed to protect someone else.
“It is either the desire of the girl to cover her tracks or to keep someone that she knows from being blamed,” he said.
