Chase suspect fatally shot after brief standoff with Houston police

Houston police opened fire on a suspect they say tried to stop a K-9 officer following a chase and standoff on the southeast side.

HOUSTON – A suspect led Houston police on a chase along the Gulf Freeway early Wednesday before he was fatally shot.

The chase started around 8 a.m. when the man refused to stop his blue Ford Expedition for officers.

Houston TranStar showed the suspect leading officers on the Gulf Freeway and nearby surface roads before he turned into a business area on Featherwood Drive near Fuqua. The suspect came to a stop but continued to ignore officers' commands for about 10 minutes.

Air 11 was overhead as the man got out of the SUV and walked around, all while officers stood nearby with guns drawn. The man got into the SUV but soon got out again, and that's when officers sent in a K-9 unit.

Soon after the police dog went in, officers opened fire, shooting and killing the suspect. Police later said the man had a long knife that he was trying to attack the dog and its handler with.

It's believed the man was wanted as a possible suspect in a burglary at an apartment.
