Burglar steals rescued dog in northwest Houston

HOUSTON -- A small Husky named Pepper didn't get to spend much time at the Winborn household, but she left her mark quickly.

"She was sweet," said Sara Winborn. "She would just follow you around through the house."

The Winborn family lost her almost as soon as they had taken the 6-month-old puppy in. Pepper was a stray dog whose pictures were posted on Facebook by the woman who found her.

"She didn't know what to do with her," explained Winborn. "So I just asked her if she didn't find an owner, if I could keep her. And she said yes, okay. We checked through the SPCA, Craigslist and through the community and no one claimed her."

Winborn said as soon as the family brought Pepper home at the Clearbrook Apartments in northwest Houston, the dog immediately seemed to adjust.

"That's her beanbag. She claimed it to be hers."

That's where they left Pepper a day later when the family went out to purchase some dog supplies. But when they returned, they discovered that their apartment had been broken into.

Thieves had smashed through the glass of one window, climbed inside and opened the second window. The only thing they stole was Pepper.

"So instantly I called my husband. And he told me to call the police."

They've posted updates through social media pleading with whoever took Pepper to do the right thing. The Winborns have been the victims of burglars before but never quite like this.

"That's the crazy part. It's just shocking. Who would break in just for a dog?"

Now, more than anything else, the Winborns want Pepper to be returned safe and unharmed.

"We want her back," said Sara.
