HOUSTON—While fleeing from a Walmart, a shoplifter struck a pregnant woman with his car before an off-duty deputy opened fire, according to authorities.

Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, an off-duty Precinct 4 deputy identified two shoplifters at the Walmart on 290 at Tidwell. He confronted them in the parking lot.

The male suspect ran to his car, tried to run over the officer and hit a pregnant woman who was standing nearby, according to deputies.

The deputy pulled his weapon and fired several times at the vehicle before the suspect got away. Investigators do not believe he was wounded.

The pregnant woman was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

The deputy was not injured.

The female shoplifting suspect was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
