HOUSTON -- Houston police are defending their decision to set a suspected car burglar free.

The man was seen on surveillance video stealing from vehicles in Huffman.

Police said he confessed, and even led them to the loot, but instead of taking the man to jail officers, let him go, telling the victims they'd issue a warrant for him later.

“I was extremely upset. Now having said that, there were probably 20 of us there and so the police took him off someplace like to his house, or someplace, and released him. He didn't release him in front of us,” said Mitchell Murphy, a burglary victim.

Houston police said it's standard practice to release people accused of misdemeanors and issue a warrant for them later.
