HOUSTON—Harris County authorities say three people were part of a ring that scammed Toys R Us.
Members of the ring spent the last year stealing items out of Toys R Us toy stores all over Houston and Harris County, investigators said. After taking the items, they would return them saying they received them as gifts and did not want them.
The trio in custody netted as much as $100,000, said Sara Marie Kinney, spokeswoman for the Harris County District Attorney.
Investigators took Karen Shed, Eduardo Zamora and Donna Dodd, also known as, Donna Trevino, into custody. Authorities said they expect to arrest more members of the ring to which the trio is suspected of belonging.
Toys R Us would not elaborate on its return policy which states that customers must have a receipt in order to get a cash refund. Another major chain said it allows customers a “limited” number of returns without a receipt.
Some customers said it seems fairly easy to scam stores.
“Sometimes it’s too easy,” said Athena Redd. “Sometimes I think a lot of people don’t adhere to policy that the companies do have.”
