HOUSTON—Several people caught stealing wheels off parked vehicles in a westside neighborhood crashed into Woodlawn Cemetery while trying to get away from police, the Houston Police Department said.

Police said it was around 2:30 a.m. Friday when a resident spotted two vehicles parked in his or her driveway near Antoine Drive and Northampton Way.

When police arrived, one of the vehicles was already gone, but a white car was still there and sped away when the driver spotted the patrol car. Police said the suspects crashed into a fence around the nearby cemetery. The duo in the car then jumped out and ran, evading police.

HPD set up a perimeter but the suspects were never located.

Police said before they arrived, the criminals had already taken the wheels off an SUV.

HPD did set up a perimeter and searched for the suspects using police dogs and a helicopter, but they all managed to get away.

“It seems like more and more friends know someone this has happened to.  It seems to be a lot of Tahoes, SUVs, Escalades,” one neighbor said.
