MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – Detectives north of Houston responded to a report of a suspected copper thief who was found dead in a CenterPoint Energy substation.

A serviceman entered the substation in the 25200-block of Interstate 45 on Wednesday night and discovered the body, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The worker told deputies the man was unconscious on the ground.

“They arrived at the scene at approximately 10:40 p.m.,” said Detective John Schmidt. “Upon their investigation they found several tools consistent with copper theft. There was some copper missing – some criminal mischief to the property.”

Responding paramedics said there were no signs of life.

Detectives said a second suspect was likely involved in the theft. They believe the pair made entry onto the property by cutting a hole in the fence on the west side of the substation.

The dead suspect’s identity was not released, but deputies said he was 37 years old.
