HARRIS COUNTY, Texas –The 22-year-old man arrested and charged in the brutal murder of a Harris County woman has now confessed.
Zein Imran Ahmed is being held on a murder charge but his motive is still unclear. His family said he is a distant acquaintance of the victim’s daughter and they live about half a mile away. They claim Ahmed was home at the time of the murder.
The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was stabbed to death several times in her home early Monday.
It happened around 1 a.m. in the 8300 block of Poplar Ridge Lane in north Harris County.
The victim’s 16-year-old daughter told deputies she and were mom were asleep when two men broke into their home. That story is different from the one Ahmed tells.
Ahmed allegedly told police that he knew the daughter and she let him into the house. He confessed to climbing on top of the girl’s mom while she was in bed and began stabbing her when she woke up startled.
The 48-year-old mother was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the incident, the daughter ran to a neighbor’s house for help and was not injured.
"She said her mom was screaming loud, and I did think I heard a scream but I didn’t know for sure," said Marcus Cox, the neighbor. "I just thought it was some kids down the street."
Neighbors said they also heard glass breaking in the victim’s backyard around the time of the break-in.
The victim worked for the DPS for 30 years, according to sources.
Ahmed is being held on a $50,000 bond and appeared in court Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators say there could be another arrest in the case.
