HOUSTON – It sounds like something from a horror movie, but Miguel Anaya got a real-life scare Tuesday morning when he found a stranger in the backseat of his SUV.

The 23-year-old security guard had just gotten into his vehicle around 2 a.m. to go to work when he saw a pair of eyes looking at him in his rearview mirror.

Scared, Anaya said he slammed on his brakes at Clarewood and Alder in southwest Houston, and the 18-year-old intruder jumped out of the car.

Anaya followed, and the pair got into a struggle.

Anaya said at one point, the teen asked to be arrested.

"I noticed he had something big in his pocket. So I just, I like, ‘Stop or I’m a’ shoot.’ He didn’t stop so I shot," Anaya said.

Anaya said he shot the teen in the leg because he "didn’t want to kill the dude."

It was unclear if the teen was actually armed.

Anaya, a husband and father, has only been commissioned to carry a gun for about four months, but he’s worked as a security guard for five years.

He said he’d noticed the teen loitering near his SUV in the parking lot before he left for work.

Anaya said the teen appeared to have gone through his CDs and grabbed his baby’s stroller out of the SUV seconds before the shooting.

The teen was taken to the hospital.
