HOUSTON -– Houston police say an armed man who punched an officer was taken into custody following a three-hour standoff early Tuesday.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance call at a townhome in the 13800 block of Hollowgreen Drive. HPD said a man, who was armed with a knife, punched one of the responding officers and then ran back into the home.

A SWAT team was called in, and officers with rifles surrounded the home.

HPD spokesman Victor Senties said around 9:15 a.m. officers decided to enter the home, and the suspect put up a struggle. Two officers deployed their Taser guns, and the man was taken into custody.

Senties said the officer injured earlier in the morning was treated at the hospital for a cut lip.

The suspect was taken to pyschiatric center to get checked out. Police said he faces a pending charge of aggravated assault of a police officer.
