HOUSTON – The Crime Stoppers reward has been doubled as police search for the men who killed a cab driver during a robbery in southwest Houston.
Houston Police Department homicide detectives were called to the 7800 block of Brompton at about 7 a.m. Friday. Investigators said Donalvon Odell Rhyne, 52, had been shot to death during a robbery that happened at 10:45 Thursday night. The United Taxi Cab driver had dropped someone off when two men approached and robbed, or tried to rob him.
”Two guys just walked up off the street maybe they were looking for a victim of opportunity, is what I believe at this point,” said Sgt. Meeler, with the Homicide Division.
Rhyne fought back and was shot, police said.
The cab sat in the parking lot all night, with no one knowing the driver was dead inside. Then someone noticed it Friday morning and called police.
Ryne’s wife of 25 years said he’d had trouble before as a cab driver, but never anything violent.
The reward in the case doubled to $10,000 on Monday, thanks to United or Yellow Cab, adding $5,000 to the Crime Stoppers reward.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the fatal shooting to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
