HOUSTON – Police shot and wounded a 34-year-old man who they said was attacking a woman with a box cutter late Saturday at a southwest Houston shopping plaza.
Dhafir Rasheed is charged with aggravated assault of a family member after police said he stabbed and assaulted a 34-year-old woman, court records state.
According to the Houston Police Department, the incident happened at 10:20 p.m. in the parking lot of the West Bellfort Plaza Strip Center in the 8800 block of West Bellfort. Witnesses said victim was attacked by Rasheed, who was riding as a passenger in her car.
Initially, the victim was able to escape the vehicle, but Rasheed caught up to her and dragged the woman across the parking lot back to the car, witnesses said. That is when bystanders call 911 to report the assault in progress.
When police arrived at the scene, they were flagged down by witnesses who said the assault had turned into a stabbing.
Officers said they saw Rasheed seated in the car. The suspect was holding the victim by the neck through the window of the vehicle and was stabbing the woman with a box cutter.
Police instructed Rasheed to stop what he was doing and to drop the weapon, but he refused. The suspect then dropped the woman and put the car in reverse, police said.
The victim was hit by the car when in reversed, police said. One of the officers open fired on the suspect to prevent him from causing any more injury to the woman. Rasheed was hit more than once and was transported to Ben Taub Hospital, police said. The victim was also taken to Ben Taub and is expected to survive.
