HOUSTON -- There was an all-out manhunt in the Spring Branch district Friday night. It centered on the Hickory Shadows Complex at I-10 and Wirt road, as well as the woods around it.
Investigators said it ended at a tree house.
“According to the suspect, we passed him a couple of times, but that’s very easy to do,” said Sgt. John Bedingfield with the Houston Police Department.
Police identified their suspect as D-Nice Palm. He had eluded them earlier on Friday, first in his van and then on foot.
“So he probably moved around a couple of different times and we passed him,” Sgt. Bedingfield said.
For several hours, some residents were prohibited from entering and leaving the community. Some said it was scary to know that a wanted man could be anywhere.
“It’s just like a scene from a movie,’ resident Jay Xu said, “Except that you’re in it.”
Police said they wanted Palm in connection to an armed robbery from earlier this week at Bering Drive near Westheimer.
It is where they believe Palm and Travon Baul, 22, allegedly robbed three people at gunpoint and then locked them in trunks.
Baul was arrested but Palm did not surface until Friday when police said they spotted him in an older Dodge van near the Sam Houston Race Park.
It led to a high speed chase on I-10 toward downtown that ended with a flat tire in the HOV lane.
Witnesses said they saw the driver get out, run across six lanes of traffic, jump an overpass, and head toward the neighborhood.
Thick trees kept Palm from being seen by air. At night, canine units and a state-of-the-art DPS helicopter helped track him down.
Investigators said he was unarmed at the time.
