HOUSTON -- An overnight standoff lasted about five hours before a man with a machete handed his girlfriend and then himself over to authorities, police said.

A Houston Police Department SWAT team was called to a northwest side apartment shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.

Family members at the complex, located on Deep Forest Circle at W. Tidwell Road, said an altercation broke out as the woman tried to move out of her boyfriend's apartment.

"The girlfriend called a friend, asked her to come and help her to move out," said an HPD spokesman. "That's when the suspect returned and told the girl that she was not leaving."

Everyone fled the apartment except for the suspect and his girlfriend.

Family members said the man had a machete and several knives in the apartment, and he refused to let his girlfriend leave. A cousin of the victim said family members were concerned because the couple has a history of domestic violence.

HPD officers set up a communication device to try and talk with the suspect for several hours.

Around 7 a.m. he let the woman go, but he stayed behind. After another 30 minutes, he finally turned himself over to authorities, and the standoff came to a peaceful end.

HPD said the man will now face kidnapping charges. His name was not released.
