GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- The mother of a man convicted of killing two central Nebraska men in 2007 has been fined for attempting to interfere with the investigation of her son’s case.

Esperanza J. Kraft of Pasadena, Texas, is mother of Marco E. Torres Jr., who will be sentenced in January for the March 2007 deaths of Timothy Donohue and Edward Hall, both of Grand Island.

Kraft pleaded guilty in Hall County Court last week to misdemeanor charges of attempted obstructing government operations and false reporting. Those charges were reduced from felony conspiracy to commit tampering with witnesses. She was fined $500 for each count.

The 62-year-old Kraft, among other things, was accused of encouraging a witness to give a false statement to police.
