HOUSTON –- A suspected drunken driver who led police on a lengthy chase later told officers he thought his friends were driving, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD said the suspect was first spotted driving on the Southwest Freeway with flat tires around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. A 911 caller pointed police to the suspect’s direction as he took the connecting ramp to the West Loop northbound.
Police tried to stop the man, who they said was driving around 40 miles per hour on the freeway.
Several minutes later the suspect took the ramp to Highway 290 westbound. He finally came to a stop at 43rd Street, and police took him into custody.
Police said the car belonged to the driver. When they asked him why he wouldn’t pull over, he allegedly told officers he thought his friends were driving. Officers said no one else was in the car.
Police gave the driver a field sobriety test, and he was taken into custody.
No accidents or injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
