HOUSTON –- Police opened fire on a suspect after the man allegedly wouldn’t follow commands to get out of his car, officers said.

According to the Houston Police Department, it happened outside the Palace Inn on the Eastex Freeway near Bender around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said they were first alerted to the suspect after sensing the strong smell of marijuana.

Officers approached the man, who quickly jumped in a nearby car. Police said he wouldn’t get back out of the car, and when he reached for something in the console, they opened fire.

“Officer D. Morelli discharged his service weapon at the suspect,” said HPD spokesman Victor Senties. “He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital. It is my understanding he was in stable condition, and he’s going to survive his injuries.”

Drugs were later found in the man’s car.

As is standard with an officer-involved shooting, HPD Internal Affairs and Homicide are investigating the incident.
