HOUSTON – An off-duty police officer shot and killed a burglary suspect Monday at an upscale apartment complex on Kirby.

The University of Texas police officer was working security at the Arcadian Apartments when he responded to a call about a possible break-in around 1:45 p.m.

The officer found the door of apartment 731 kicked in. He went inside and confronted an apparent burglar.

"The suspect immediately charged him and they began to struggle," said HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva.

As the two men fought, the officer managed to break free. He pulled his gun and fired at least one shot at the suspect.

The suspect, whose name has not been released,  was pronounced dead at the scene.

Houston police are investigating the shooting. They haven’t determined whether the suspect was armed.

The UT officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution to be checked for injuries he suffered during the fight.
