GALVESTON -- Multiple people were arrested Saturday night on the Strand in Galveston after a disturbance involving police and a group of people who refused to leave the area.

According to Galveston police, the incident happened near the intersection of 23rd Street and Strand around 1 a.m.

Police say officers began a sweep of the Strand event area after the conclusion of the Mardi Gras festivities when a group of people refused to leave.

Officers say objects were being thrown from the crowd and partygoers moved barricades into the street to block police.

Officers utilized their crowd control training and were able to successfully clear the streets, according to Galveston police.

Officials say seven people were arrested during Saturday night’s disturbance. Six of them were charged with various misdemeanors. One person, Ashton Cooper, 20, was charged with Assault on a Peace Officer, Evading Arrest, and Criminal Mischief with bonds totaling $55,000.
