HOUSTON – A motorcycle rider died early Saturday after trying to evade police near downtown Houston, police said.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers attempted to pull over a motorcycle with no headlight at 1 a.m. on North Shepherd Drive, but the rider took off.

The motorcycle went in and out of a neighborhood near North Shepherd, and then got back onto Shepherd from Pinemont Drive, police said.

The rider was traveling so fast heading south on Shepherd that he was able to lose police. Officers then called off the chase, but were then called to a motorcycle accident at Durham Drive and Shepherd.

Police said the rider who eluded them was going so fast down Shepherd that he failed to negotiate the curve in the road where it turns into Durham. The suspect hit the curve and went airborne, hit a tree and slammed into the side of a parked car in the parking lot of Sonic.

The rider died upon impact, police said.
