HOUSTON – A Sweet 16 party ended in gunfire Saturday night leaving a mother in serious condition after being hit with stray bullets, police said.
“Just a sweet, innocent mother,” said witness Joe Torres.
According to the Houston Police Department, the shooting happened at the Royal Court II rental hall located in the 6700 block of Antoine near West Little York in northwest Houston.
Investigators said it all began when two groups of males got into an argument and started fighting inside the hall. One of the groups was asked to leave, but then came back.
“Heard at least 12 gun shots, like pow-pow-pow,” said Torres.
DJ Freddy B was inside playing music when he heard the gunfire.
“I heard a shot and I said everybody get down,” he said.
One male in a black or dark-colored truck pulled up and started shooting shortly after, police said.
The mother of the 16-year-old girl who was holding the party went to the front of the hall and a bullet went through a glass door, police said.
“She was just focused on getting to her daughter ‘cause she was at the front,” he said. “She was concerned, ran towards the front and the bullet intersected her.”
The bullet struck her in the side of her stomach.
“They were devastated,” he said. “Everybody was praying. Everybody’s hurt and confused. She didn’t want to lose her mom.”
Police said the mother was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in serious but stable condition.
Investigators said they believe she was not target, but rather an innocent bystander who got in the line of fire.
The suspects fled the scene and got away.
“They could have ruined everything and killed someone,” the DJ said. “They shot the mom of the Sweet 16 girl. They have to catch those guys.”
