HOUSTON -- 2012 began with a tragedy and is ending without answers for one local mother. Now she's hoping the holiday will spark someone's memory.
It's been that way for nearly a year since Mari Nunez lost her son and only child to a hit and run driver.
Gerardo Nunez was killed on January 1, 2012. The 31-year-old became Houston's first homicide of the year.
"I want to keep sleeping so that way I can be with him all the time,” said Mari Nunez. "I'm still waiting for him to walk in and I realize that everything was just a dream."
Nunez was seen around 1:15 a.m. on New Year's Day shopping at a corner store in southwest Houston. He grabbed a couple of household items and then began to walk to the home he shared with his mom.
Witnesses told authorities the striking vehicle made a U-turn, pulled up next to the victim and then drove away. Crime Stoppers has offered a reward for information in the case, but so far no one has been arrested.
As one year comes to a close, there’s still no closure for this grieving mother.
"I just want the person to come forward and admit what he did," said Nunez.
Authorities said the vehicle was a dark Cadillac sedan. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
