HOUSTON—A mother has been charged after leaving her 13-year-old and 5-month-old in a car for nearly an hour.

Mercedes Davenport, 30, has been charged with one count of endangering a child.

Davenport allegedly stopped at the Northchase Village Apartments in northwest Harris County to look into renting a unit on June 7, 2012, and decided to leave her kids in the car while she went inside.

The high temperature that afternoon was 94 degrees.

Police say a witness saw the children in the car and waited about 30 minutes before going over to get them out.

The witness called the sheriff’s department and deputies were waiting for Davenport when she returned about 45 minutes later.
