HOUSTON— Not a day goes by when Joshua Woods isn’t on his mother’s mind.
“I think about my son all the time,” said Dazie Williams. “I just couldn’t protect him that day.”
Joshua Woods was gunned down over his Air Jordan tennis shoes six months ago after he and a friend purchased a pair at the Willowbrook Mall on the launch date of Nike’s latest addition.
The 22-year-old and his friend had no idea that they were being followed when they left the mall.
“I called my son that morning telling him to be OK. I told him that because I knew he was going to buy those shoes,” she said.
Four men were arrested and charged for the crime, which was only one in a string of similar acts of violence around the country.
Last year, a 16-year-old Houston boy was also murdered over his Air Jordan shoes.
Now, Williams has launched a campaign called “Life over Fashion,” which aims to pressure Nike to alter the way the costly sneakers are distributed.
“Just give the stores more quantity, and make it so that if I don’t get them today I can get them tomorrow,” she said.
She believes the changes could cut down on the craziness that often accompanies a launch date.
Volunteers are collecting signatures on a petition to present to Nike.
“Life over Fashion is for your child and your loved one,” she said.
A Nike spokesperson called consumer safety extremely important and said the company continues to work with retailers to make improvements.
