HOUSTON – Three people have been indicted in connection with the 2010 death of a baby girl, including her mother and grandmother.
Jennifer Zarnfaller, Vikas Sharma and Rona Landon were arrested Thursday morning and charged with seriously bodily injury to a child.
Zarnfaller, 41, and Landon, 71, proclaimed their innocence Thursday morning as they were being taken to the Harris County Jail.
"She passed away and I did not have anything to do with it. I’m not guilty," Zarnfaller said.
Zarnfaller’s 9-month-old baby, Julia, died two years ago after being taken to Willowbrook Methodist Hospital with injuries that included broken bones.
Her death was later ruled a homicide caused by blunt force head trauma with a skull fracture and brain injury.
A grand jury investigating the case tried to question Zarnfaller, her mother and Sharma, her boyfriend, but they didn’t show up, according to Precinct 4 investigators.
"If you’re subpoenaed to the grand jury you should be there. And by these folks now showing up it basically tends to appear that they’re being uncooperative with the fact finding grand jury," said Asst. Chief Mark Herman with Harris County Precinct 4.
It’s not clear if Sharma, 29, was the father of the baby.
All three suspects are being held on $50,000 bonds.
