GALVESTON, Texas – A man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for assaulting two Texas City police officers, Galveston County Criminal District Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

Dennis Steele was found guilty of two counts assault on a public servant by a jury after 15 minutes of deliberations.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Cuchens presented evidence of 10 prior felony convictions during the punishment phase.

The convictions stem from an incident on Nov.6, 2013, when a Texas City police officer arrested the Steele on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Once placed in a holding cell, Steele fell asleep on the floor. When a jailer and patrol officer tried to move him, Steele became combative and scratched, bit, and kicked the two officers causing bodily injury to each.

The two officers struggled with Steele for several minutes before a third officer was able to assist in regaining control over him. He did not suffer any injuries.

Steele will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least a quarter of his time.
