SHENANDOAH, Texas—A man as been sentenced to prison for running over a Shenandoah police officer with an ATV in 2010.
Joseph Charles Lynch, 30, was ordered to serve 10 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice system for assault on a public servant, a first-degree felony.
Lynch was riding his four-wheeler ATV in the early-morning hours of December 30, 2010, when law enforcement officers attempted to stop him.
Lynch circled through several residential yards, then stopped and waited for Sergeant Raymond Shaw to exit his patrol unit. Once the officer began to approach him, Lynch accelerated and hit the officer with his ATV, according to police.
Sergeant Shaw sustained severe injuries to his leg and shoulder and was unable to stand.
After an extensive investigation, Lynch was identified and arrested on January 2, 2011.
Shenandoah Police Chief John R. Chancellor said he was pleased with the sentencing and expressed appreciation for the overwhelming support shown by citizens during the investigative stage.
“We are delighted that Raymond was finally able to return to his patrol duties after multiple surgeries and countless hours of physical therapy,” said Chief Chancellor, who also expressed his gratitude for Detective Mark V. Denham for the thorough investigation that led to the successful resolution in this case.
