BAYTOWN, Texas – A 29-year-old-man accused of beating a man to death with a baseball bat was charged with murder on Nov. 15, according to investigators with the Baytown Police Department.
Danny Bruno Jr., 29, is charged with murder with bail set at $60,000, police records state.
On Nov. 9, Bruno and the 37-year-old victim, Kevin St. Romain, got into a dispute after witnesses said Bruno was being disrespectful to the Romain at a barbecue at the Fox Apartments, according to a police affidavit.
Witnesses said Bruno was calling the victim names and making fun of him. Romain eventually responded by punching Bruno in the mouth knocking him to the ground, the affidavit states.
Bruno then went into one of the apartments and came out with an aluminum baseball bat and began swinging at the victim, the affidavit states. After a few missed swings, Bruno hit Romain in the forehead. Witnesses said the victim fell to the ground and was bleeding profusely.
When Romain was unresponsive, witnesses loaded him into one of their cars and drove him to San Jacinto Hospital, the affidavit states.
Hospital personnel confirmed that Romain had suffered serious trauma to his head and a subdural hematoma, police said. He was later moved to Methodist Hospital in Houston.
On Nov. 13, hospital staff said that Romain was brain dead and showed no signs of life. He was pronounced dead at 11:52 at the Neurological Unit, police said.
An autopsy determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
