It happened around 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the store on Old Spanish Trail near Cambridge.
Police said Dr. Stephanie Wuest, 28, was leaving the store when she was approached by Anthony Bell in the parking lot.
The two struggled at the driver’s side door of her vehicle before Bell pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, investigators said.
During the struggle, several witnesses notified a Harris County Precinct 6 deputy constable, who was working security for the store.
The deputy told investigators he heard the shots, ran into the parking lot and saw Bell taking several items from Wuest’s car.
The deputy apprehended Bell without further incident.
Wuest, a first-year resident with the Baylor College of Medicine, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and was upgraded to stable condition Friday.
Wuest graduated from the Baylor College of Medicine with honors. She is also a graduate of the Woodlands High School and the University of Texas.
