HOUSTON – A trip to the gas station turned deadly for a couple in southwest Houston early Monday after police said a man high on drugs slammed into their car.
The crash happened just after midnight in front of a gas station near the Southwest Freeway at Kirby Drive, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police said the driver of a black Chevrolet Impala left the freeway at a high rate of speed, went through a red light, and then slammed into the victims’ blue Chevrolet Impala. They were about to exit the gas station parking lot.
A clerk who witnessed the incident said the couple had just been inside the station to pay for their fuel.
Both people in the blue Impala were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released.
The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Theodore Hargrove, survived and was sent to the hospital in stable condition.
A responding officer said Hargrove appeared to be under the influence of PCP. He now faces two counts of intoxication manslaughter.
