HOUSTON – A Kipp Sunnyside High School teacher is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with one of his students.
School officials say the allegations were brought to the principal’s attention on Monday and that the first-year teacher was immediately escorted off school property.
Some parents said they wish they’d know what was going on when the allegations first surfaced.
“The teacher had inappropriate relationships with the student and it happened on two occasions. We were not notified,” said Toni Castillo, a parent. "I just think it’s really sad, I think we should be notified when anything happens.”
The school released a statement saying:
On Monday, September 23, 2013, we were notified of allegations of sexual misconduct between a teacher and a high school student at KIPP Sunnyside High School. That same day, we immediately conducted an internal review, filed a report with Texas Child Protective Services, and notified the police, who have begun an investigation. While the investigation continues, we placed the teacher on administrative leave. We have been in regular communication with the student’s parents and have informed them of the steps taken. We will continue to fully cooperate with the police investigation. At KIPP, we place a high priority on student safety and act swiftly to address any and all allegations of inappropriate behavior.
Houston Police investigators are looking into the allegations. The teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave.
