HOUSTON – A young burglar who was caught red-handed trying to break into someone’s truck in east Houston early Monday was injured while he was trying to make a getaway, according to Houston police.

Police said two suspects traveling in a stolen van attempted to break into a pickup truck on Westmont at Candlewick around 12:30 a.m. The truck owner and other neighbors witnessed the break in and attempted to stop the suspects.

During the confrontation, one of the neighbors was hit in the face as the suspects fled the scene. One suspect jumped the fence in back of a house and, not realizing there was a bayou behind it, fell down a steep embankment.

HFD came out and pulled the suspect to safety, then transported him to the hospital with minor injuries. Police said the suspect, who is a juvenile, is being charged with burglary of a motor vehicle.

The other suspect got away. His age was unknown.

Police also found a possible stolen bicycle in the back of the van.
