HOUSTON – Police have charged a couple for soliciting their children. Melissa Walls and Oquinta Brown are facing child endangerment and abandonment charges.
According to the Humble Police Department, the couple dropped their children off on the side of the Eastex Freeway for hours to sell tickets. Humble police spotted the children along the busy highway.
“I say, ‘What you selling?’ They say for their iPod, for their school basketball team and stuff. They be asking customers, they be trying to sell tickets,” said an employee at a Popeye’s restaurant.
The children, ages 12 and 14, were also seen trying to sell the raffle tickets inside the Popeye’s restaurant.
“They have four kids together, and they are good kids. And they would never hurt them. It’s unbelievable you’re telling me this,” said Val Blake, suspect’s relative.
Blake was stunned.
“They’re a loving family and care about their kids and work hard,” she said.
If customers refused to buy the tickets, they would ask for donations.
“She would never sell them to me, she would go to customers. She would say donate money,” said one restaurant employee.
Relatives said the family has been through tough times in the past and they made ends meet.
