HOUSTON -- Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman near a Emerson Elementary School in southwest Houston.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon in the 3400 block of Rockyridge. The victim, Merlyn Yolibeth Perez-Orellana, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I heard a pop, pop, pop, pop” said neighbor Nancy Durbin. “It scared me to death.”

According to investigators, Perez-Orellana was walking north along the sidewalk when an unknown male suspect approached and shot her multiple times. The suspect was last seen running west on Pagewood from Rockyridge.

“When she was shot she fell and that was it,” said Durbin. “ She did not move.”

The suspect is described only as a Hispanic male, 20 to 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a stocky build. He was unshaven and wearing a zip-up style turquoise coat, blue jeans and black shoes.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
