Houston officer shoots suspect during foot pursuit south of downtown

HOUSTON -– An officer with the Houston Police Department shot a suspect who he said pulled a gun during a foot pursuit near downtown.

The chase and shooting happened shortly after midnight Wednesday in the 2700 block of Hadley Street, according to Houston police.

HPD said two of its officers approached two men who were standing in the middle of the road. The men saw the officers and started running.

During the pursuit, one of the suspects allegedly pulled a gun and put it under his arm, pointing it at an officer. HPD says the officer feared for his life and fired several rounds. The suspect was hit twice and was sent to the hospital where he was expected to survive.

The wounded suspect was later identified as 24-year-old Hardy G. Moore. He has been charged with aggravated assault against a puiblic servant.

The other suspect, identified as 20-year-old Damarcus W. Gibson, was caught and taken into custody. he faces a charge of evading arrest.

HPD said the officer who did the shooting has been on the force since December 2010.

As is customary, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
