HOUSTON – A fatal stabbing of a man has been referred to a grand jury after he died Saturday night after an argument with his common-law wife in northwest Houston, police said.

According the Houston Police Department, officers responded to a call of a stabbing at 11:15 p.m. in the 2700 block of T.C. Jester near Brookwoods. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man, Catarino Tovar, 56, with one stab wound.

The victim was transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital in critical condition, but later died, police said.

Homicide investigators said the stabbing started out as an argument between Tovar and his common-law wife.

The argument escalated as Tovar assaulted her and grabbed a knife, police said. During the struggle, Tovar accidentally stabbed himself.

The wife remains in police custody as detectives try to determine what happened during the altercation.
