HOUSTON – Nineteen undocumented immigrants were taken into custody Sunday after authorities busted a stash house in southeast Houston, officials with the Houston Police Department said.

At least 16 other residents of the house in the 9300 block of Klondike Street are still at large.

Police suspect the illegal immigrants are from Guatemala.

Neighbors Donna Lawrence and Glenda Hagler said they had always suspected the home was a stash house for undocumented immigrants. Their suspicions were confirmed when a man ran to Halger's house Sunday night, pleading for help in Spanish.

“He put a gun to his head like somebody had been trying to kill him,” Halger said. “He had a broken foot, a torn foot, and when he got up to walk, it looked like somebody had been beating him.”

Hagler said she called 911 and gave the man a sandwich because he looked malnourished and in “bad shape.”

“He was starving. We fed him a bologna sandwich and he inhaled it,” Hagler said.

When authorities showed up at the residence, the men staying at the home scattered, neighbors said.

“HPD has told us today they are on it, and they are gonna start cleaning out the neighborhood,” Lawrence said.
