HOUSTON – A 28-year-old armed male suspect, who was shot by a Houston police officer during a disturbance Sunday evening, died Monday morning, police said.

According to the Houston Police Department, two officers responded to a disturbance at 7:15 p.m. at the Rama Apartment complex, located in the 9200 block Woodfair Drive in southwest Houston.

During the disturbance, the male suspect refused to drop a gun he was brandishing and then pointed it at the officers, police said. One of the officers, J. Medina, then shot the suspect several times.

The incident happened in front of neighbors and children, police said.

The wounded suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital and died early Monday after undergoing several hours of surgery, police said. His identity has not been released pending verification by Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The officer who shot the suspect was not injured during the altercation, police said.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
