HOUSTON—At Worthing High School in southeast Houston, the focus Friday was more on grief than learning.  Counselors were brought in to help students cope with the loss of one of their own: 17-year-old star running back, Deandre Elliot.

“I don’t understand,” said the teenager’s father, Detrick Elliot. “Why him? You didn’t have to take his life, he would have given it to you.”
Deandre’s life was taken just before midnight at an apartment complex in southeast Houston.  Police said he had just left his girlfriend’s apartment, when she heard gunshots outside, and then Deandre knocked on her door. Police say he was wounded in the head and chest. They say the teenager collapsed on the doorstep and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness reports seeing a suspect in his early 20s leaving the scene in Deandre Elliot’s car, a 1992 Buick Park Avenue. It is blue-green in color and with custom wire spoke wheels, say police.
“I’m not angry.  I’m hurt,” said Deandre’s grandmother, Betty Elliot. “I’m in a lot of pain.  Sometimes you just can’t explain how you feel inside.”
The teenager’s grandmother and father remember him as a responsible young man who took academics as seriously as sports.  They add he was always full of joy and compassion.
“Someone who really cared,” says Betty Elliot.  “He cared about his friends.  He cared about his family.  He was very family oriented, and right now, there’s a hurt you can’t explain.”
The search is on for the suspect who is still at large.

I just hope they find the vehicle and there is enough evidence to identify and jail these dirt bags. I look forward to hearing about them on death row claiming they are mentally ill.

do hs football players not have a curfew, anymore ?

native47 said on November 20, 2009 at 1:31 PM

This is a shame, but what was a high school student doing out at midnight? What happened to the curfew Houston instituted several years ago?

missprissy said on November 20, 2009 at 1:36 PM

Druggies wanting the wheels & tires for the $$$$$ they are worth. It is a shame that people don't want jobs anymore. I guess it is faster and easier to just rob & kill to get what you need, in the crooks eyes. What a shame that such a promising young man had to lose his life over a car. Smypathy to his family.

madeintexas said on November 20, 2009 at 2:16 PM

Does it really matter why he was out so late? A young man was killed for no reason. I hope they find the people responsible for this and give them the needle. Prayers to the young mans family and his girlfriend that had to witness such a tragedy.

piecznski said on November 20, 2009 at 2:28 PM

So sad to lose his life so young. Doesn't matter why he was out that late or if he was in a bad part of town. No young kid deserves this and no mother deserves to have to bury her child. :[ R.I.P. DeAndre

marka22 said on November 20, 2009 at 2:38 PM

So true. Who cares if he was breaking curfew. Last time I checked we were in America and had the right to go anywhere in a city and not be murdered. How his family gets some closure.

joe510 said on November 20, 2009 at 2:40 PM

When the perps are caught, we'll have to listen to the grieving perps parent claim they are 'good boys'! Yeah, right!

firedog said on November 20, 2009 at 2:47 PM

marka have you forgot you live in houston. just saying if there is a curfew and he would have following it, he would still be alive.

houcat01 said on November 20, 2009 at 2:56 PM

I just hope HPD capture and charge this scambags fast and send to death row.

mrsandman said on November 20, 2009 at 3:05 PM

The rims aren't worth the money so why buy them....? Sad way to lose your life, but then again people lose their lives in houston for way more trivial reasons than this. Sad thing is it will never end.

kekesopretty said on November 20, 2009 at 3:05 PM

WELL I KNEW DEANDRE I GRADUATED FROM WORTHING HIGH C/O '07. AND ME PERSONALLY FEELS LIKE THIS SHOULDNT HAVE HAPPENED THEY NEED TO BAN THOSE RIMS FROM TEENAGERS AND I HOPE HPD CATCHES THOSE WHO KILLED HIM OVER A STUPID CAR WH3N ALL OF THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. BUT MY PRAYERS ARE WITH DEANDRE AND HIS FAMILY.

pigtracker06 said on November 20, 2009 at 3:16 PM

As all of read this we say oh how sad or he was innocent . O.K. enough 2 wrongs never make it right , The answer to what he was doing out so late ..it is obvious what he was up to, the same as any teen age boy around his age. the bigger question is where was his parents ? let them comment... as to the scumbags-- This is the main reason we have concealed weapons permits, A way to stop some of these problem STOP GOI STAYING OUT PAST 930 P.M. on the weekdays and be home by 1100pm on weekends . If it has to be done that late at night why cant it wait until the morning .....

raymon said on November 20, 2009 at 3:18 PM

You people think that this is a big deal! It's a typical way of getto life! Tomorrow it will be someone else!

drmhouston said on November 20, 2009 at 3:34 PM

nice car 20,000$.......................... nice rims 5,000$......................... killer sound system 2,000$.................. kids life = 0$....................very sad

nomoredrama said on November 20, 2009 at 4:11 PM

WTH does ghetto life have to do with it..I swear some of you are freaking morons....My son has known Deandre since middle school, a nice young man, it had nothing to do if he was out late, you just have people of all colors from all walks of life, who do not want to work and want to steal from those who do...the guy at Meyerland was white and was not from the ghetto at all idiots!!!, some of you are so self righteous and are probably criminals yourselves. My heart goes out to his family, May God comfort them in their loss and grief.. My heart and prayers also go out to you idiots that make really stupid and biased comments and I really hope nothing like this ever happens to you or your family outside of your local ghetto..geesh!!!

msyellarose1 said on November 20, 2009 at 4:15 PM

How sad. They could have just taken the car and spared that child's life. Cowards. My prayers go out to his family.

pooby627 said on November 20, 2009 at 5:13 PM

This young man lost his mother over the summer and continued gong to school so that lets u know he was not a ghetto child. So raymon u owe an apology and if u feel u don't maybe u can still repent to the LORD and ask for forgivenessfor stereotyping this young man. Imagine if all adults stereotyped all of the children we would probably go to HELL in a Handbasket.

hogger said on November 20, 2009 at 5:17 PM

Some of our young people have the responsibility of transporting parents or sibilings to or from jobs after curfew. This may have been the case. I will not ask why he was out that late. We do not know for sure. It is irrelevant as to where it happened. The fact is that once again, in our nation, it did. I pray for his family and friends. Unfortunately, I find it hard to do the same for these criminals. We have allowed God to be kicked out of our schools and businesses and communities. Unfortunately we are finding out who is taking up residence in his abscence. No parent should have the heartache of burying their own children. God comfort this young man's family and friends, and show his vengence on who ever committed this terrible deed.

threedogs said on November 20, 2009 at 6:15 PM

There are always those out there that figure you don't need an education to get ahead. They will just take what you worked for, plus your life.

daisymay said on November 20, 2009 at 6:59 PM

Not to worry, prisons are chock full of morons that thought they were too smart to get caught. Someone will snitch on them, and before long, they will be sitting on death row. To murder someone in cold blood for a car with rims? Who is breeding all these killers? What is wrong with today's youth?

nookie19 said on November 20, 2009 at 11:24 PM

For the people who asked why was this young man out so late and where was his parents, all that is not important. He lost his life for nothing and everyone needs to pray for him and his family. We all need to stop judgement and pray that these people are taken off the street. It dosen't matter if it is day or night time, these thugs are out robbing and killing people. My nephew was killed in cold blood 4 months ago in broad daylight, he was minding his own business. So let's not judge or make rude and ignorant comments for a family to read that is already hurting from the loss of a child. .This is not ghetto life, this young man had a promising future ahead of him which was cut short for no apparent reason. He had the right to ride on any type of rims, in any type of car that his parents allowed him to have. My thought and prayers go out to his family, friends, Worthing school and the sunnyside community. I pray they are caught soon. Nookie's Aunt

houstonteacher said on November 21, 2009 at 10:09 AM

This is a tragedy for the family. Whether or not this kid was a decent kid or not the fact still remains that parents today need to "parent' their children. There is no reason a 17 year old needs to be out at midnight on a school night. This could have been avoided if he was safely sleeping at home in bed where all young 17 year old children should be...

asiseeit said on November 21, 2009 at 10:22 AM

To you morons who make the statements "It makes no difference that he was out so late", "Does it really matter why he was out so late? " . Think about it moron, if he hadn't been out so late(breaking the school and city curfew) he would not have been there to be a victim. Common sense, you don't have. It makes no difference what color he was, he made the decision and he paid for it with his life. Even though he made the wrong decision, it's a darn shame that he lost his life because of those scumbags. And now some other parent will lost a child when the murders are caught.

cranky said on November 21, 2009 at 1:37 PM

AS always some people have to insert racism into their comments. Scumbags come in all colors, shapes, sizes and ages. Stay on the subject. A young man, minding his own business had his life taken from him. Prayers and blessings to his friends and family. Someone will rat on the perpitrator.Remember God will sort out everything in the end.

isaidit said on November 22, 2009 at 11:06 AM

why is it that everyone is stuck on his age and the time of night of his murder. would it be o.k. if he had been 21 yrs. old and coming from work and had gotten murdered? What does common sense have to do with someone being killed for their own property. A woman was ran over and killed in MEYERLAND parling lot in the middle of the day!!! So, did she not use common sense?

ringo said on November 22, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Of course he had a right to ride on rims...but he might as well be walking around covered in $100 bills. How many people have to get hurt or die for something so stupid? I have a friend whose son was seriously beaten with a crow bar for his rims. He turned out okay, but it took over 3 months for him to recover, he almost died, at first the docs thought he was going to be paralyzed, and now one of his legs will never be the same. Let them know you want them to live and show them the countelss articles about people killed for them. There were three people killed in another state just the other day for a set.

nurset68 said on November 24, 2009 at 6:59 AM

To the insensitive idiots that think the brightness of daylight, or the "right part of town" will save you from an idiot like this killer: A vicious person doesn't care about daylight or darkness, "the right part of town" or "the wrong side of the tracks", if you have something they want, they will take it. My heart and prayers go out to the parents, family and friends of this young man. I will also pray for you and your family, because God knows we wouldn't want you to be in his parents position. So when you think you're protected by daylight or "the right part of town" watch your back.
