HPD: Alert off-duty officer helps arrest suspect in northside robberies

HOUSTON – An alert off-duty police officer may have gotten a serial robber off the streets Friday afternoon in north Houston.

According to the Houston Police Department, the suspect committed three armed robberies in a span of 30 minutes that included a stealing a purse from a woman around 11:30 a.m. at outside the Tidwell Pharmacy, located in the 2300 block of Tidwell.

Investigators said the 23-year-old suspect was targeting victims in parking lots on the north side with the second robbery happening just 15 minutes after the first in the 4400 block of the North Freeway. The third occurred around noon in the 7900 block of Bauman.

After police released a description of the suspect’s Nissan Maxima, the off-duty police officer spotted the car in a nearby neighborhood as he was passing through the area.

Police were then able to track down the suspect to a friend’s home, which was across the street from his mother’s house. The suspect was taken into custody after several of the items reported stolen were found inside his vehicle.

Police also found a toy gun in his possession, which may have been used in the robberies. The suspect may also be connected to several other robberies the north side.
