HOUSTON – One person is dead and two others were wounded in a shooting early Saturday at a large party in northwest Houston, police said.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to a call of a shooting at 1 a.m. at a small home in the 6200 block of Nyoka Street near Okanella Street.
Investigators said that a cream-colored car pulled up to the party where there were about 50 to 60 teenagers and a gunman in the backseat opened fire. As many as 10 shots were fired into the crowd which was in a parking lot next to the home.
Three male victims were shot and were taken to various local hospitals, police said. One of the victims, Wayland Clark, 24, of Houston, was taken to Ben Taub Hospital where he later died.
The two other victims were transported to area hospitals where they were treated for non life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police said a fourth person may have been grazed on the arm, but is expected to be OK and did not have to go to the hospital.
People who were at the party say it was supposed to be a small birthday party, but someone posted it on Facebook and things got out of hand.
"Those people that live there are nice people,” Murphy Wallace, a neighbor, said.
"I just heard gun shots. At first I thought it was firecrackers then I heard all the gunshots,” Hazel Wallace, another neighbor, said.
This news has stunned those living in the neighborhood for the past 40 years.
"That's what we call home, our children were raised here, our great-grandchildren, this is home to them, too," Wallace said.
Another neighbor said that her niece was at the party.
"I just know that my niece was over there. She saw on Facebook. I didn't like the idea of her going there. She's 17 years old and I’m like, ‘Oh my god, please don't let her be there.’ We were nervous,” Elena Cardona, a neighbor, said.
They're all hoping the gunman turns himself in.
"Not fair, I pray to god he turns himself in,” Cardona said.
Investigators are hoping witnesses from the party can help them catch the suspect. The wanted vehicle is described only as a light-colored, four-door car, possibly a Honda or Toyota.
