HOUSTON—A man who may have suffered from mental illness was taken into custody after a brief standoff in southeast Houston early Monday, according to Houston police.

A mother called HPD to her home in the 5800 block of Lyndhurst at Southbank around 12:30 a.m. saying her son was making threats against her.

Police arrived and tried to talk to the suspect through the door, but he would not cooperate. SWAT officers were then called to the scene after the son – believed to be armed with a pistol and machete – threatened to blow up the house.

The son gave up without incident right as negotiations were about to begin.
