HOUSTON—The mother of a 5-month-old who was dropped off at a southeast Houston fire station Monday has been located and charged by police.

Stephanie Estrada was charged with child abandonment.

According to a babysitter, she and another woman offered to watch the child after noticing the mother would leave the baby alone in the motel where they were living.

The women watched the child overnight, but Estrada never came back. The babysitter decided to be safe and drop the baby off at Houston Fire Station #35 in the 5500 block of Van Fleet.

“She hasn’t called, hasn’t tried to find out where her baby is,” said Alysha. “Pretty much bringing her here was the last resort because we don’t know where she belongs.”

Alysha admitted that the firefighters were surprised when she walked in the door.

“Well, they were like a little bit shocked,” she said. “They were more than willing to help and they jumped right into action.”

CPS took custody of the baby, Lily, as a search for her mother began. Police said they found Estrada around 2 a.m. Tuesday at a bar in the 6300 block of Mykawa. She claimed her car had broken down.

Estrada’s bond was set at $2,000.
